Two pumpkins made for the Brighton branch of Dr. Sketchy‘s Hallowe’en show.
One of them features several firsts for me: typography, scrolls and flowers, all in the same design. I call the other lad Macaulay Pumpkin.

The expression on Macauley’s face is fantastic! Gave me a giggle. The fingers kinda blew my mind – how did you carve such realistic detail out of pumpkin?

Thanks Melanie!
The fingers are realistic because they’re my hands
I drew around my hands (though admittedly the claws are not mine) and then cut straight into the pumpkin all around the line. I then sank diagonal cuts in from the outside to meet the outline, so that I’d isolated the hands’ shapes. From there it’s pretty easy: removing the 90 degree corners by sliding a diagonal cut down them, leaving the shapes fatter at the knuckles, sinking the nails lower than their beds, and so on. Time-consuming, but not difficult.
